Making (DIY) art pop

Hey there all! Hope you had a lovely weekend! Hope those of you in the NYC area are stocked up – please be safe over the next few days! So this is another one of those little projects I’ve had on my mental list forever, and this no-spend month is as good a time as any to get it done. Seriously, I want to go shopping SO bad. But this has been a GREAT month of getting lots of projects done and I will power through. :) Back when I was finishing up our <a href="http://thriftydecorchick.blogspot.com/search/label/family%20room">family room reno</a> I needed some art for a wall and did a very quick piece of my own using a canvas I had picked up for another project. It turned out OK but it was a little dark and moody for the family room. The colors went gray instead of blue so I didn’t love it there. I was changing things around in the master so I ended up hanging it there – and quite liked it. Problem was, I’m not spending on DIY this month and I didn't have enough of that lattice stuff. So I searched through the wood pile in the garage and came up with a solution. It’s really hard for me to give up stuff I know I can use later. I really really love it! I’m so blue

First of all, I need to shout out to the world a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our not-so-little man! Can you believe he is eight today? I know some of you have been following along with me for years (thank you for that) and I simply cannot believe that he was only 18 months old when I started this blog. We are truly the luckiest parents ever – he is such a sweet, respectful, fun, happy child. He is growing so, so fast and I love him so! I’ve mentioned before that this month kicks my BUTT. Like, a swift kick. We celebrate birthdays for my brother, husband, son, nephew and now grandson all in the first two weeks of the month. And ten years ago (setting the tone for this crazy month) we went and got married in late December. Plus the holidays…and I know it’s all coming every year. It’s not a surprise. I just can never get caught up enough from the month before to get ahead during this one. ;) So this weekend I was trying to decorate my house and clean it (which is just a losing battle) while taking care of bday plans for the Bub. I’m sharing our Christmas house tour tomorrow and I still have bins and garland and ornaments strewn throughout the main level…I’ve got some work to do. All that being said…this is the most special month of the year to me and our family and I absolutely love it. And after this week I will be able to slow down and bask in all of the Christmas joy. ;) So me being me…Friday night I pulled out more Christmas bins and instead of decorating I decided a dresser needed to be painted. Makes sense. Do you ever look at something for a while and the more you look at it the more it drives you totally crazy? Like you just can’t stand it all the sudden? It doesn’t happen often with me but when it does I can’t get it out of my head. But lately – just in the past two months or so -- it’s seemed so bright (it’s a little more subdued in that photo) and out of place with the rest of our house. So Friday night I walked past it, couldn't stand it one more minute and head for my paint stash. What I’d really love to do is take the dresser down to it’s original natural wood – but that will take a warm day and more time. :) I bought it on Craigslist already painted but the insides of the doors look gorgeous. I painted it over two nights – both when it was dark. Brilliant I know. A glass door, sorta kinda

Hello to you! Hope you had a great weekend! Ours was lovely – lots of time outside, a date night with my hubby and family time as well. So happy that summer is here! So a couple years ago I wrote a post that got a huge response – I never imagined <a href="http://thriftydecorchick.blogspot.com/2012/04/glass-doorcould-you-do-it.html" target="_blank">talking about glass doors</a> would be so interesting. :) I spoke of my desire to add some glass to our front door. We have a transom window above the door and five windows in the living room/foyer, but because we face north the foyer especially can feel dark. So the years passed and I still couldn’t get over how much I wanted some natural light up there. And the boy got older and I really wanted to be able to easily see where he was at outside. I mean, in my defense, there are some that aren’t great looking. I have just always preferred the look of just the plain door. But my mind changed. It happens. I’m growing, changing, all that stuff. We got it from Lowe’s and it was actually a long wait to get it installed. It was about six weeks, maybe more, from start to finish. The last two weeks were the hardest – it was getting nice out and the Bub was outside all the time and I wanted that glass door so bad! When it was installed I instantly felt very mom-like and very suburban. You know how I feel about <a href="http://thriftydecorchick.blogspot.com/2010/09/my-style-is-suburban.html" target="_blank">suburban</a> – some think it’s a bad word but it’s me. Proud of it. I’m not totally obsessed with the way it looks from outside, but it’s not horrible at all. I went with a cranberry color (there weren’t a ton of options) because I figured it would work best with our front door. Living room refresh

Good Monday to you! Hope you had a great weekend! I’ve mentioned before that I LOVE when I get to move furniture around…because I never move it around. Our house has a very open floor plan and very little useable wall space (that isn’t covered by windows). So once I find a spot for something it stays…forever. Moving furniture is a rare treat. :) I found this étagère at HomeGoods a couple years back and it was love at first sight. I loved the detail on the sides of it and the size – nice and skinny. It was right where the dining and living rooms meet and it felt awkward. I don’t have a full shot to show what I mean. It wasn’t awful or anything, I just wasn’t feeling it. I moved the bookcase over and loved it in that spot! And that of course started off a series of other small projects as well. It’s how I do. :) When I installed the <a href="http://thriftydecorchick.blogspot.com/2014/04/diy-craftsman-window-trim.html" target="_blank">new window trim</a> a couple weeks ago I started replacing the chair rail as well. I wanted something simpler that would sit flush against the window trim. And when I put the rail in years back I kind of cheated along that half wall behind the desk. Long story short the trim on the half wall didn’t meet up with the chair rail on the wall. I finished off the new chair rail and the top of the half wall with caulk and two coats of semi gloss paint. I still have quite a bit of chair rail to replace but I’ll do that as the budget allows. Today I’m kicking off a fun little shindig I’ve got going…I’m pinching myself because I’m partnering up with Target over the next few months to show off some of their new items in the Threshold line. Have you seen it? Do you LOVE it?? Of course you do, it’s awesome. (And I’m not just saying that, I’ve been drooling over it for months.) Target calls this line of decor a “casual-traditional look” and when I read that I was like – bingo, that’s my style! That may explain why I like it so much. You’ve probably seen the brand popping up for the past few months, but it’s about to get even better! They challenged us to spruce up the foyer this month and I’m so stinkin’ happy with how it turned out! Well there’s an area off the the right of that buffet that I consider still part of our foyer, but it’s an odd little spot. It’s right by the stairs, kind of in the dining area, but it’s still part of the entry into the house. It’s one of those spots I’ve struggled with for years now. Over the past year or so I’ve had a settee and a wall of old vintage windows on the wall, but with the blue on the dresser the settee looked all wrong, so it got moved up to the <a href="http://http://thriftydecorchick.blogspot.com/2013/02/changes-in-master.html">master bedroom</a>. I had an idea to lighten up the spot and replace it, and I started with a trip to Target. Instead it became a spot to pile purses and clothes on three feet high sooooo…it came out. It’s SO easy to recover a seat like this! If you haven’t attempted it I promise you can do it! That wall has always stumped me because it’s big but I couldn’t do a mirror (there’s one above the buffet), I couldn’t do a gallery wall (one on the staircase right next to it). Six years ago this would all have been red and black. Five years from now it may be all white. But for now I’m a big fan of color in our home, it makes me happy. Especially this time of year!
