Home Nursing - What You Should Know First

Normally, any individual desiring of health care treatment for his body condition approaches a health care setting. Based on a doctor's advice, he gets admitted in the clinic or receives outpatient care. With home nursing, individuals can now receive healthcare treatment in their homes. This form of healthcare treatment is useful for people who can't move out of their homes due to any impairment.

This type of nursing is also useful for elderly people who can't travel distances to get admitted into a health care setting. In fact, in more than 80% of cases where people have volunteered for home nurses have said that the hospital or the clinic was too far from their homes, and they would ideally like the treatment to be provided in their homes.

Home Nursing - Caring For Older People

When you hear about an older person or a sick person who needs home nursing, do not automatically decide that they're going into a nursing home. This term now refers to the kind of nursing one gets as a patient within the environment of one's own home.

There are nursing professionals who will come right to your door to deliver good care. In the beginning, there were public health nurses who used to come in as an extension of hospital care to check on their patients and do whatever was needed.

Now, with patients being discharged from the hospital even quicker than ever before, the need is even greater. And most people would rather get back to their own familiar territory as long as they'll be checked by competent professionals who know what they're doing with regard to treatments and medications. There are many nursing programs available.

Alzheimer and Home Nursing

Having had the experience of losing my grandmother due to the Alzheimer's disease (AD) I have been really reluctant to speak about my beloved grandmother's condition for a long time with anyone else except her personal home nurse. This woman appeared to my child eyes as a representation of an angel, since she was able to take care of my grandmother who has always been taking care of me. Her love and devotion to her profession, made me consider her as the next Maria Teresa that one day I would proudly admit to have met. Today, after conducting some research on the subject of nursing, I understood that a home nurse taking care of Alzheimer's disease patient is a very difficult issue and it can be a huge burden. Especially if the nursing is offered by a close family member, this act of caring and love can become too hard for one to bear and can be too time consuming even for those we would love to take care of, like our parents. Thus, researching and finding a nursing home for those we love but sadly suffer from AD has to be a conscious decision.

Preparing for such a crucial stage in one's life is advised by experts, who support that when one feels that there is not yet a need to do anything-grandparents or parents are still young enough-then it is time to start planning ahead in order to avoid a crisis situation later. Even if you may never need a nursing home, it is wise to act in a proactive manner just in case something happens. As many can attest, having to make a decision during a crisis situation can be an extremely difficult, stressful and painful process for everyone involved.

First, begin by researching your area's library and learning as much as possible on the Alzheimer's disease and current methods of treatment. By finding out as much information as possible, one is not oblivious to the possibility that this disease may appear in the future and it is always better to be knowledgeable than ignorant and to be proactive. It is also a good idea to begin creating a list of nursing homes that operate in your area and are certified to treat Alzheimer's disease patients. You local Alzheimer's Association, or an elder law firm, can give you such information as a list of the facilities that offer dementia care or at least a dementia unit.

The Need For Nurses Doing Home Nursing Jobs

There is a rising trend towards the need for home health care. People are generally becoming busier as everybody needs to make a living. Such is why when there is a debilitated family member, assistance is needed. By this assistance, it may mean that of a health professional's, or a homecare professional. And then again, such is why home health care professionals and services are increasingly becoming more in demand. Being a home health care professional is among the most lucrative and promising career choices of the time. One aspect of homecare giving is home nursing jobs. By this, it means nursing jobs being rendered at home, to an incapacitated or disabled person.

Such services are provided to those who require personalized patient care. Nurses doing the services often have to mingle with the patient's other family members. In fact, they may already be considered as family members themselves. Within the scope of home nursing jobs is giving periodic services to the patient in their own home. Possible patients for this vocation are the elderly, those suffering from illnesses and accidents, incapacitated patients, and those resting after childbirth. Parents who are unable to take care of their children due to their jobs and other occupations may also hire home nurses. Other than providing care and services, these nurses have become close friends as well.

After all, parents and relatives entrust their family member to them. The main responsibility in home nursing jobs is to tend to the patient's health needs and problems. Basing on the needs and the condition, the nurse often devises nursing care plans. There are other responsibilities as well which are entailed of the nurse. Like for instance, specialized homecare and supportive long-term for patients of all ages. The elderly often benefits from home nursing as they are able to obtain companionship from the nurse. High dependency nursing can be one of their basic needs at this point, and nurses can provide it.

Finding A Good Home Nursing Job Has Great Prospects

It is an acknowledged fact that in America, the number of aging people is higher, as well as greying persons, compared to the younger generation in what is called a population ratio of aged versus young. This is a source of worry for the Administration, irrespective of the political polarities. One of the key factors for this has been the higher level of medical care, combined with a lower birth rate, as families tend to disintegrate, and couples prefer not to have children, as far as possible. These are borne out by statistics, but that is not is the issue here.

But the above has its implications. As humans age, so does their medical and para medical aid requirement increases. In fact, most life insurance and medicare insurance companies are quite worried about this trend. Surely, you would have read about it. it's a fact. And that proves an opportunity for you.

If you are a qualified nurse, or a degree, experience or education in medicare, you should find yourself finding a job quite fast. And of your choice too.

There are numerous facilities that care for the aged. In fact, they have flourished in the last decade, as the aged cannot or are not able to be cared for by their children, and prefer to be put in a care home, where they can be with their own age group, and spend their twilight years in good harmonious surroundings. Of course, jobs in these facilities are tough. There is a lot of trauma involved in emotions, age-related trauma, medication, para medical care in helping those who need help in eating, washing, cleaning, walking, or being wheeled around. Some have difficulty in speech, some are silent, brooding, some are vicious, because of the wounds they have suffered, pensiveness, and so forth. You know it better as a nurse or as a para medic.

Home Health Care: Choose Wisely

Many people don't think about it until it's too late, but home health care is something that you should consider before hospitals or nursing homes become your only option. Realistically, wouldn't you want your children to keep you around after you are unable to take care of yourself, in the comfort of your own home?

If you have not run across the idea of home health care yet in your travels, it combines the best of many worlds of care. The same quality of care a patient would get in a hospital is transferred to a private residence, where the patient is the sole focus of a trained professional on hand.

The person will be trained in many basic and advanced parts of the treatment process, including having knowledge of nutrition, IV's, patient and caregiver processes, occupational and dietary therapy, and a consistent knowledge of anything medically related that specific person needs to be health and safe in the home environment.

Hiring a Home Health Care Employee

Providing the primary care for an elder loved one can be difficult. When you cannot deliver all the elder care yourself and support from friends, family, and community organizations is not enough, it may be useful to hire a home health care worker. He or she can offer care from a few hours a week to 24 hours a day, and can provide many other helpful services. Types of in-home health care services include:

General Health Management like administration of medication or other medical treatments
Personal care such as bathing, oral hygiene, dressing, and shaving
Nutrition help like preparing meals, assisting eating, and grocery shopping
Homemaking services including laundry, dishwashing, and light housework
Companionship for example reading to the senior or taking them on walks

Recruiting and Interviewing Applicants

There are many avenues for hiring a home health care employee. Generally, home health care workers can be hired directly or through an agency. Home health care agencies often have a staff that includes social workers and nurses that will manage your care. However hiring an independent home health care worker is generally more cost effective, it will also give you more control over the type of care you receive.

Senior home care workers should be carefully screened for proper training, qualifications, and temperament. Fully discuss the needs of the elder care recipient during an interview with a prospective home health care employee.  There should be a written copy the job description and the type of experience you are looking for.
